Bursary Coverage  

The SAAFoST Undergraduate Bursary provides financial assistance as follows:  

- Tuition Fees Coverage:  

- Covers the actual tuition fees as charged by the tertiary institution.  

- Fees are capped at a maximum of R40,000.00 per annum.  

- Payment Process:  

- Funds are paid directly to the institution on behalf of the student.  

- Payments are made in two instalments per year:  

1. First Instalment: Issued at the start of the academic year, provided the student achieved satisfactory final marks in the previous year.  

2. Second Instalment: Paid after the first semester, contingent upon satisfactory academic performance during the semester.  

- Duration of Support:  

- The bursary is renewed annually and continues until the recipient graduates, provided they meet all academic performance requirements.

 Eligibility Requirements  

To qualify for the SAAFoST Undergraduate Bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:  

- Academic Excellence and Potential: Preference will be given to students who demonstrate strong academic performance or show significant potential in their studies.  

- Enrolment Requirements:  

Applicants must be registered as full-time undergraduate students pursuing their first degree or diploma in Food Science and Technology at a recognised South African tertiary institution. They must be on track to complete their chosen study programme within the standard timeframe set by the institution:  

  - Undergraduate Degree (up to B.Sc (Hons)): 4 years  

  - B. Degree or Higher Diploma: 4 years  

  - B. Degree: 3 years  

- Residency:  

Candidates must be South African citizens or permanent residents who have lived in South Africa for at least three years prior to applying.  

- SAAFoST Membership:  

 Applicants must have been members of SAAFoST for at least 12 months before submitting their application.  

- Personal Statement:  

A written personal statement, no longer than one A4 page, is required. This statement should explain how the applicant’s education and training in food science and technology will positively impact their life and the broader scientific community.  

- Reference Letter:  

Applicants must provide a reference letter that speaks to their character. This letter should be written by someone from their tertiary institution who has worked with them in a learning capacity.  

- Review Process:  

Applications will be reviewed by the SAAFoST Foundation. The Foundation’s decisions are final and binding.  

Bursary Conditions

1. Acceptance Agreement

Recipients are required to sign a contract as acknowledgment and agreement to the stated conditions.  

2. Awarding of Bursaries 

- The granting of bursaries is not automatic.  

- SAAFoST Foundation retains the right to withhold bursary awards.  

3. Eligibility for Consideration  

- Only students who apply within the specified deadlines will be considered.  

- Applicants must fully complete the application forms.  

- Registration must be confirmed by a university.  

4. Reporting Obligations 

 - Recipients must submit a six-monthly report and exam results to the SAAFoST Foundation.  

- Reports should include key academic highlights and details of participation in SAAFoST activities.  

5. Conversion to Loan  

The bursary may, at the sole discretion of the SAAFoST Foundation, be converted to a repayable loan with interest if the recipient:  

- Terminates or interrupts studies without formal permission.  

- Fails to complete studies within the agreed timeframe.  

- Fails any semester or year of study.  

6. Suspension and Reinstatement

- The bursary may be suspended if the recipient does not pass all required courses or supplementary exams for a given year.  

- If the student successfully completes all courses the following year, including previously failed ones, the Foundation may refund suspended tuition fees and reinstate the bursary.  

- The Foundation will not cover repeated courses, subjects, or modules.
