The Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA) is an important organisation in South Africa. It focuses on improving skills in the construction industry. Since it started in 2000, CETA has worked to support training and help workers develop their skills, ensuring the industry has skilled and capable people. As an approved Education and Training Quality Assurance (ETQA) body, CETA manages different areas, such as making building materials, construction jobs, professional services, and road and civil construction.

In honour of the late Mr. Thapelo Madibeng, a core business executive who passed away in August 2018, CETA has named its bursary programme the "Thapelo Madibeng Bursary Scheme." This initiative reflects Mr. Madibeng's commitment to education and skills development within the construction industry.

Fields Covered by the Bursary

The Thapelo Madibeng Bursary Scheme is open to students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in construction-related fields. The bursary encompasses a wide range of disciplines, including but not limited to:

- Architecture (National Diploma / BSc to PhD)

- Building Arts (BA)

- Building Construction or Equivalent (N4 to N6)

- Civil Engineering (BSc to PhD)

- Climate Change Science (All levels to PhD)

- Construction Building Information Modelling (BIM) (All levels to PhD)

- Construction Economics (BSc to PhD)

- Construction Management (BSc to PhD)

- Construction Studies (BSc to PhD)

- Electrical Engineering (N4 to N6)

- Environmental Management (All levels to PhD)

- Geomatics (BSc to PhD)

- Property Development (BSc)

- Quantity Surveying (BSc to PhD)

- Real Estate (National Diploma)

- Urban and Regional Planning (BSc to PhD)

This extensive list ensures that a broad spectrum of construction-related professions is supported, fostering a well-rounded development of skills within the industry.

Coverage of the Bursary

The bursary provides comprehensive financial support to successful applicants, covering:

  • Tuition Fees: Full coverage of academic fees as prescribed by the institution.
  • Prescribed Textbooks: Costs for essential textbooks required for the course.
  • Accommodation and Meals: Expenses related to housing and sustenance during the study period.
  • Transport Fees: May be covered under certain conditions.
  • Research Allowance: Additional funding for Masters and PhD students to support their research activities.

This holistic approach ensures that students can focus on their studies without the burden of financial constraints.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Thapelo Madibeng Bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Citizenship: Must be a South African citizen.
  • Employment Status: Currently unemployed.
  • Educational Background:
    • Currently in Matric or have completed Matric.
    • Intending to study or currently studying towards a qualification within the built environment field at an undergraduate or postgraduate level.
  • Institutional Enrollment: Registered or accepted to study at a public institution in South Africa, including Universities, Universities of Technology, or TVET Colleges.
  • Academic Performance: Achieved a minimum overall average of 50%.
  • Household Income: Total household income must be less than R600,000 per annum.

These criteria are designed to identify and support individuals who demonstrate potential and are in need of financial assistance to pursue their educational goals.

Required Documents

Applicants are required to submit clear, certified copies of the following documents:

- Identification:

- Certified copy of the applicant's ID document.

- Certified copies of parents' or guardians' ID documents or death certificates.

- Academic Records:

- Latest Matric results if currently in Matric.

- Matric certificate if completed.

- Full tertiary academic record, including the latest results if currently studying.

- Proof of Acceptance: Official letter of acceptance from a tertiary institution.

- Financial Information:

- Quotation of student fees, if available.

- Proof of parents' or guardians' income (latest three months' payslips if employed or an affidavit if unemployed).

- Residence Proof: Proof of home address (e.g., municipal account, bank statement, or a letter from a tribal authority or councillor).

-  Additional Documents:

- Copy of SASSA card (front and back) or proof of grant if receiving a SASSA grant.

- Details of other funding received, if applicable (e.g., NSFAS or any other SETA funding).

 - Medical certificate if disabled.

Ensuring the submission of all required documents is crucial, as incomplete applications may lead to disqualification.
