The UKZN Rick Turner Scholarship Programme 2025
The University of KwaZulu-Natal
(UKZN) has long been recognized as a leading institution of academic excellence
and social transformation in South Africa. Among its many initiatives to
support students and promote research that addresses critical societal issues,
the Richard AD Turner Bursary Fund stands out as a unique and impactful
scholarship programme. Established in memory of the late Richard “Rick” Turner,
a visionary academic and anti-apartheid activist, this scholarship seeks to
honour his legacy by supporting postgraduate students whose research and
leadership align with his ideals of justice, freedom, and democracy.
The Legacy of Richard “Rick” Turner
Richard Turner was a prominent figure
in South Africa’s struggle against apartheid. A lecturer in political science
and philosophy at the University of Natal (now UKZN), Turner was known for his
unwavering commitment to social justice and his ability to inspire others to
envision a democratic future. Despite being “banned” by the apartheid
government for his activism, Turner continued to exert a profound influence on
his students and the broader community. His involvement with trade unions and
his advocacy for workers’ rights were instrumental in shaping the discourse
around democracy and equality in South Africa.
Tragically, Turner’s life was cut
short in 1978 when he was assassinated at his home in Durban. His death was a
devastating loss, but his ideas and ideals lived on, influencing the fight for
a democratic South Africa. Decades later, his vision of a just and free society
became a reality with the advent of democracy in 1994. The Richard AD Turner
Bursary Fund, established through a generous bequest from Turner’s mother,
Winifred Jane Turner, ensures that his legacy continues to inspire future
generations of scholars and leaders.
