Funza Lushaka Bursary Application Requirements
Here is everything you need to know about the Funza Lushaka Bursary. The Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme supports teaching studies as the department of education is trying to increase the number of teachers in South Africa. It is open to students pursuing or hoping to pursue a teaching degree in South Africa. The bursary recipient will be required to teach in public schools for the same duration as the bursary. The Funza Lushaka Bursary basically provides financial support to students who wish to study teaching. It is open to all eligible students who wish to pursue a teaching degree. These degrees are funded by the Funza Lushaka Bursary: Bachelor in Education (commonly knwon as BEd) and Postgraduate Certificate in Education (commonly known as PGCE).
Requirements you need to meet to be considered:
- 1) Only South African citizens who have a valid South African ID Number are eligible to receive the bursary
- 2) If you have a criminal history or were fired from your job, your application will not be accepted.
- 3) Your application will be rejected if your spouse or guardian is employed in a higher education institution.
- 4) Bursary applicants must have been accepted to a BEd/PGCE degree at an accredited public university. A bursary can only be granted if at least two priority area subjects are included in the teaching qualification. This is except for the Foundation Phase specialisation.
- 5) While you wait for the result of your bursary application, please note that you will be responsible for paying the registration fee. The registration fee is not a guarantee that you will be granted the bursary.
- 6) To be eligible for consideration, applicants must be at least 30 years old and younger.
Important notice
The bursary is only for one academic year. The bursary can be renewed every year for the duration of the qualification if the student proves academic success. Bursary holders will need to reapply every year starting on the 1st October. To keep the bursary, or to be re-rewarded with it, applicants must demonstrate great academic excellence. The applicant must be committed to teaching. This includes a passion for teaching young people, enthusiasm to teach, and the ability to overcome difficult challenges. If the recipient does not meet the requirements of this bursary agreement, the bursary must be repaid. Late applications will not be considered whether it is a new application or a reapplication so it is advisable that you apply on time. The bursary covers tuition, accommodation, study material, meals and in some cases an allowance is also provided.
Qualifications that are eligible for funding
- 1) Undergraduate studies: A 4-year Bachelor of Education (BEd) that specializes in one of the following: Intermediate Phase (Grade 4 - Grade 6) or Senior Education and Training Teaching (Grade 7 - Grade 12).
- 2) Post graduate studies: A 1-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education is available for students pursuing degrees in two priority subjects. One module or course must be completed at the 3rd year level and one priority subject must be completed at the 2nd year level. Only the PGCE Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching will be funded (Grade 7-12).
Application process for the Funza Lushaka Bursary
All bursary applications are processed by the Bursary
Selection Committee between February and March. The University's Funza Bursary
Coordinator will inform you by the 30th April 2023 if you have been granted a
bursary. Bursary holders are not permitted to change the specialization on
which the bursary was granted. The bursary holder must accept a provincial teaching
position upon qualification. The bursary holder cannot defer this contractual
obligation, such as to continue full-time Honours study or to take a "gap
year".
