Eskom was founded in 1923, it was originally named Electricity Supply Commission but the name was changed to Eskom in 1987.Eskom as Africa's largest electricity provider is responsible for the generation of about 95% of South Africa’s electricity as well as 45% of Africa’s electricity usage. They have been at the forefront of powering the continent's growth and development. Central to its mission is not just the generation of electricity but also the nurturing of future talent. The Eskom Bursary is a financial aid program aimed at supporting academically gifted South African students who demonstrate financial need. The bursary is designed to provide assistance throughout the duration of the recipient's undergraduate studies, covering tuition fees, accommodation, books, and other related expenses.

Eskom is inviting students to apply for their bursary programme, for the 2024 academic year.

35 bursaries will be awarded for studies within the following fields, at University of Technology:

§  Chemical Engineering (Diploma)

§  Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current) (Diploma)

§  Electrical Engineering (Light Current) (Diploma)

§  Mechanical Engineering (Diploma)

University Study option

§  Chemical Engineering (Bachelor Engineering/ Bachelor Science)

§  Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current) (Bachelor Engineering)

§  Electrical Engineering (Light Current) (Bachelor Engineering)

§  Mechanical Engineering (Bachelor Engineering/ Bachelor Science)

§  Civil Engineering (Bachelor Engineering/ Bachelor Science)

§  Mechatronics Engineering (Bachelor Engineering/ Bachelor Science)

 

Types of Eskom Bursaries available

1.Eskom Scholarship

This scholarship is only offered to depends or children of Eskom employees, if the applicant is deserving and has a parent or guardian who has been working for Eskom for 5 plus years then he or she can apply. The scholarship will cover the following; Tuition fees, residence or other accommodation fees, book allowances and meals.

2. Full Eskom Bursary

This bursary will be awarded to deserving academic students. After completing their studies students will enter into a work back obligation which means that they will work at Eskom for a certain period of time, this not only benefits Eskom but mostly the students as they gain work experience. This bursary covers, Tuition fees, book allowances, PC allowances, Residence or other accommodation fees, Meals and vacation allowances and accommodation.

3.Eskom Merit Bursary

This bursary is awarded to academic deserving students who come from financially disadvantage background and students with disabilities, students will not be required to work at Eskom after completing their studies. This bursary covers, Tuition fees, book allowances, Registration fees, Residence or other accommodation fees, and Meals.

To be eligible for the Eskom Bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:

1. Applicants must be South African citizens.

2. Applicants must have achieved a minimum of level 4 for English, in Matric final.

3. Applicants must have achieved a minimum of level 4 for Physical Science, in Matric final.

4. Applicants must have achieved a minimum of level 4 for Pure Mathematics, in Matric final.

5. The bursary is available for a variety of fields including Engineering (Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial, etc.). Applicants must be pursuing studies in one of these specified fields.

6. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and should not have access to other sources of funding.

7. Successful applicants must be accepted or provisionally accepted at an accredited University of Technology in South Africa their chosen field of study.

8. Applicants must have complete Matric the previous year.

9. Applicants must not be in receipt of any other bursary funding and must not be register at any tertiary institution.

 Students with disabilities will be given preference over other applicants and students from underrepresented designated groups will also get priority.

The Eskom Bursary covers various expenses associated with undergraduate studies, including but not limited to:

1. The bursary covers the cost of tuition fees at an accredited South African university.

2. Funds are allocated to cover accommodation expenses, either in university residences or private accommodation.

3. Financial assistance is provided for the purchase of prescribed textbooks, stationery, and other study materials.

4. A stipend may be provided to cover day-to-day living expenses, such as food, transportation, and incidentals. 

Applicants are required to submit the following documents along with their bursary application:

2. Certified copies of Matric final results or Grade 12 results.

3. Provisional acceptance or proof of application to an accredited South African university for the intended field of study.

4. Certified copy of the applicant's South African Identity Document.

5.  Documentation demonstrating the financial need of the applicant's household, such as payslips or affidavits.

6. A personal statement outlining the applicant's academic goals, career aspirations, and reasons for applying for the bursary.

Closing Dates for 2024

31 January 2024. No late applications will be accepted.
