The Pinnacle Leadership Programme traces its roots back to the establishment of the Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship programme (VCS) at NMMU in 2010. Since its inception, the School of Accounting (SoA) has consistently attracted a significant portion of VCS recipients annually. Recognizing the potential of these scholars, the SoA initiated efforts in 2011 to provide tailored support for their development. By 2012, all VC Scholars within the SoA were actively engaged in the inaugural iteration of a specialized programme aimed at facilitating their attainment of the required 75% weighted average stipulated by VCS policy. Over time, the initiative evolved to encompass a broader cohort of high-performing students within the SoA, including beneficiaries of the Tegkor bursary, and extended to include VC Scholars from other faculties, culminating in a group totalling 160 students by 2014.

Diverging from conventional academic support strategies geared towards underprepared or underachieving students, this project uniquely targeted the enhancement of success factors crucial for potentially high-performing individuals. The project's framework was structured around four primary dimensions: academic enhancement, professional development, personal/leadership growth, and fostering a sense of social responsibility and global citizenship. Implementation strategies ranged from individual and collective mentorship for academic growth, to industry engagement for professional advancement, and active involvement in leadership forums and community service initiatives for personal and social development.
