The South African Nursery Association (SANA) Bursary 2025
The South African Nursery Association (SANA) is a non-profit organisation established in 1947 to represent the interests of the country's green industry. Over the years, SANA has expanded its scope to include various related associations, such as the Allied, Bulb & Seed Trade Association (ABSTA), the Garden Centre Association (GCA), and the Bedding Plant Growers Association (BPGA). The primary objectives of SANA include promoting a professional image of South Africa's horticultural industry, facilitating communication among nursery businesses, and liaising with government departments on industry-related and environmental matters.
Fields Covered by the Bursary
The SANA Bursary Programme is designed to support students pursuing qualifications in Horticulture and Landscaping. These fields are essential for the cultivation and maintenance of plants, garden design, and the broader green industry. By investing in education within these disciplines, SANA aims to foster the next generation of professionals who will contribute to environmental sustainability and the beautification of public and private spaces.
Bursary Coverage
The bursary specifically covers tuition fees for the current academic year and is paid directly to the educational institution. It does not cover outstanding fees, registration fees, accommodation, practical training, travel expenses, allowances, or the cost of prescribed books. Applicants should ensure they have alternative means to cover these additional expenses.
Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for the SANA Bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Academic Qualifications: Applicants must have completed their first academic year of study in a Horticulture or Landscaping qualification and passed all modules with an average of over 60%.
- Level of Study: While the bursary primarily targets undergraduate students, postgraduate students (PhD, Masters, and BTech) may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Institutional Registration: Applicants must be registered for the 2025 academic year at a recognised and accredited tertiary institution in South Africa.
- SANA Membership: Applicants must either be current student members of SANA or apply for membership, which is free of charge.
Application Process
To apply for the SANA Bursary, follow these steps:
1. Download the Application Form: Access and complete the SANA Bursary Application Form for 2025, available on the SANA website. Click here to download application form.
2. Prepare Supporting Documents: Gather and attach the following documents to your application:
- Certified copy of your ID document.
- A recent photograph of yourself (e.g., a portrait photograph, student card photo, or selfie).
- Current academic record, including results of all completed modules.
- Certificates of any other completed studies.
- Banking details of your tertiary institution (on the institution's letterhead).
- Proof of registration for the 2025 academic year (on the institution's letterhead).
- Completed SANA Student Membership Application Form for 2025.
- Completed SANA Bursary Checklist for 2025.
- A motivational letter of at least 150 words addressing the following points:
- How do you envision your career developing within the green industry?
- Have you participated in any community volunteer work? If so, where, for how long, and what was your experience?
- Have you been involved in the horticultural industry? If so, were you a volunteer or employed, and what were the main lessons learned from that experience?
- Have you visited any nurseries? If so, where, and what left the most significant impression on you?
- What is the distance to your nearest nursery, and what is it called?
Ensure that all documents are complete and correctly filled out, as incomplete applications will not be considered.
3. Submit the Application: Email your completed application form and all supporting documents to Ayanda Radebe, the Bursary Administrator, at ayanda@sana.co.za. Use "SANA Bursary 2025" as the subject line of your email.
Closing Date
The application deadline for the SANA Bursary is 31 March 2025. Late applications will not be accepted, so ensure that your application is submitted on or before this date.
